Coastguard Courses - Coastal Medic and Coastal Offshore
Coastguard Coastal Medic courses are marine specific to sailors and seafarers and offers different options.
Coastguard Coastal Medic
This course covers emergency response to life-threatening conditions in a marine environment where EMS is likely to be delayed. This is an 8-hour course. Expiry is 5 years. Can be used as an Offshore Medic prerequisite. This course does not qualify for NZQA unit standards.
Includes:
- Primary Care - CPR, defibrillation, unconsciousness, severe bleeding.
- Medical emergencies – responding to common medical conditions, Heart attack, seizures, Asthma, Anaphylaxis
- Trauma emergencies -near drowning, burns, soft tissue injuries, fractures, head injury.
Coastguard Coastal Medic NZQA - Blended
A Coastal Medic course plus an online module to achieve NZQA unit standards.
This is a blended course involving the completion of an online component followed by an 8-hour practical. Can be used as an Offshore Medic prerequisite.
The course is facilitated and assessed to achieve NZQA Comprehensive Workplace First Aid unit standards 6402, 6401 and 6400. Ideal for mariners who wish to attain New Zealand workplace compliance.
Expiry 2 years for Workplace compliance. Candidates can apply to any Triple One Care Comprehensive refresher course. Continuous refreshing of the Coastal Medic PLUS allows the use of the certification to be used for completing a new Offshore Medic course.
Expiry 5 years for Maritime New Zealand compliance.

Coastguard Offshore Medic
An intense one-day course for blue water sailors where patient care is prolonged as EMS is arranged and the use of appropriate Advance Life Support equipment. The course is compliant to MNZ requirements for port clearance to overseas destinations.
This is an 8-hour course, the prerequisite is a current Coastal Medic or Coastal Medic PLUS certificate.
Coastguard Combined Course
A two-day course combining;
Day 1 - Coastguard Coastal Medic or Coastguard Coastal Medic NZQA
Day 2 - Coastguard Offshore Medic
